Wellness and Prevention Programs
Life Guidance Wellness & Prevention Services helps children and families make healthy decisions. We provide prevention programs for school-aged youth, student leadership training, alcohol or other drug interventions for teens and their families, and we strengthen families by teaching parenting skills. Our collaborations with other organizations and communities help achieve and sustain positive system changes that support wellness. Our programs include:
- High School Leadership Teams: High school students are trained to teach prevention lessons and work with a prevention specialist in elementary and middle school classrooms. Available in Montcalm County.
- Minors in Possession (MIP): MIP is for the first time a youth has been found to have used alcohol, marijuana, or other drugs. It is an educational program that both the youth and at least one of the parents attend. Available in Kent County.
- Rites of Passage: This afterschool program presents a culturally specific program aimed at African American male youth. Available in Kent County. (Beginning October 2011)
- Yo Puedo: This prevention program targets Hispanic youth attending selected middle or high schools within Grand Rapids Public Schools.
- Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: This support group helped improve the lives of grandparent-led families.
- FOCUS: - This program provides families with parenting education in partnership with Friend of the Court/support to community prevention initiatives. Drug free Montcalm and Kent County Prevention Coalition are supported through staff involvement and leadership.
